Twig Shaw,
undiscovered painter of wildlife
and imaginative creatures, is
presenting her distinctive art
to the public for the first time
here at Veda Gilp Studios. We’re
honored she has selected us for
her first Show.
Each painting or scratchboard is an original work of art – not a
print. Scratchboard is an
engraving technique. A sheet of
wood or paper is covered with a
layer of white kaolin clay or
metallic foil, which is then
covered with black or colored
ink. The ink is scratched away
using very fine knives similar
to Exacto blades, resulting in
lines ranging from thinner than
.005 mm. to bold strokes
reminiscent of a paintbrush. The
surface can be reworked, with
successive layers of ink washes
and scratches, creating a
realism and depth hard to match
in other media. Every feather or
stand of hair can be
individually carved and colored!
Scratchboard lends itself to
high realism, but has also been
used traditionally for
advertising and newspapers as an
alternative to lithographs.
Twig adds gold leaf, color washes, and the
preferences of her clients’
tastes to her work to create
meaningful and unique pieces.
Her work tends to high realism
or the “woodcut” style.
Reference photography is
generously provided by Richard
and Jonathan Schadle for
American and African wildlife
and nature, and supplemented by
Elizabeth Eikenberry. Freehand
pieces are also available, in
addition to portraits.
Each painting is small; most measure 4X5” or 5X6”.
Commissioned paintings and
scratchboards may be larger.
This is a small collection, but all of us at Veda Gilp
Studios are convinced Twig is
bound for much greater things.
Before she becomes justifiably
famous, consider adding a piece
of her original art to your
collection. Thank you for
visiting and come back often as
Twig adds new paintings.
PETArt
Twig also takes commissions. She currently is creating
PETArt. Just send her a
photograph of your pet, and
she’ll make an original painting
or scratchboard of it for you.
What a wonderful way to
immortalize your furry loved
one. Contact us for availability
of Twig’s time, size, materials,
shipping time and pricing,
please. A record of completed
pieces will be kept in the
artist’s portfolio, but not sold
barring permission from the
client. (Bio

Bio of the artist: Born
overseas, Twig has spent most of
her life in the United States.
She began pursuing art at the
age of eleven, and sold her
first pieces at the age of
twelve. From the start, pen and
ink and scratchboard techniques
have been the focus of her work,
although she has dabbled in a
variety of other media including
acrylic and watercolor paints,
sculpting, paper cutting,

sculpture. Twig graduated in
2005 from the art institute of
Pittsburgh, where she studied
graphic design and Industrial
design, focusing on special
effects. She has worked as a
seamstress and clothing
